PANTERA's fourth and heaviest album yet featuring new lead singer Phil Anselmo, who would add more range and aggression to the songs. This album's mixture of Glam and PANTERA's evolving Groove style gives this album a very unique sound, partly due to songs being written between 1986 and 1988 and while looking for a new singer. Diamond's and Vinnie's playing is so tight on songs like 'Over and Out' and 'Death Trap', these are definitely the two heaviest cuts. This album is full of head banging riffs, amazing solos and new raspy vocals to go with the new image. The album was actually supposed to be released in September 1987 when PANTERA signed a contract with Gold Mountain Records. But the distributor MCA Records deemed Power Metal's content too heavy and weren't interested in releasing it, unless it was mellowed down. They were really hoping to get a major label eventually as this would increase their chance of getting noticed. While waiting for other possible labels they kept writing new songs including "Over and Out'' and the final album wouldn't have sounded as heavy if it was released in 1987. After the contract was going nowhere they had no choice but to release it on Metal Magic Records which meant they had limited exposure but at least they didn't have to sacrifice the album's sound. They had a big following and doing shows while writing new material would eventually pay off. Power Metal was released around February of 1988 and was available on LP, Cassette Tape and for the first time Compact Disc. It also had a great album cover with the band's new image and with a name like Power Metal, it meant business.

- Did you know: sometime in early 1989 PANTERA privately recorded the original Cowboys From Hell video? Yes it's true, but this footage is almost non existent...but DOES 100% exist...In the video the boys are wearing the same cloths seen in those four smaller photos. Diamond is still clean shaven and the DFH has the final '74 KISS sticker, while Rex is playing the same white Jackson bass. Even Vinnie is wearing the same Harley Davidson shirt and cut off denim jacket! They actually perform to the 1989 Cowboys From Hell demo track, which would have been recorded around this time at Pantego Sound Studios. The stage is tiny and a large 80's PANTERA cloth poster hangs behind Vinnie's kit, the yellow one you see them use around this time. Vinnie is also playing a TAMA kit, prior to this Vinnie played a Drum City DC1000 Percussion kit. There's only like 2 cameras used and pyrotechnics go off when the main riff kicks in! They do a few takes and then mess around with sombreros at the front of the stage and Diamond jumps off the platform swinging his DFH at the camera! The video was recorded in Fort Worth, Texas in 1989, nothing else is known about it...But this poster sure ties in with the video, this would have been before they were signed up and like always tried to self promote themselves. It's crazy to think this was recorded at least a year before the album version, in June of 1990. But the video obviously never released publicly...

The 1989 demos had already proven that PANTERA meant business and nothing would stop them. Along with constant touring and always writing new material, PANTERA's skill and style were fast improving and changing as the 80's were coming to a close. After being rejected over and over they finally got signed to Atco Records in 1989. Recording didn't start immediately, which would have added more songs: Primal Concrete Sledge and Clash with Reality when recordings began at Pantego Sound Studio in late 1989...unsurprisingly, The Will To Survive didn't make the cut but it's riff would return on the next album. This album was a new PANTERA sound and it was clear they wanted this to be their debut, new sound, new image, new attitude...but there was still a little Power Metal influence there. But gone were the party and romantic songs and the album is a lot darker and more chaotic than last one. Diamond, Vinnie and Rex deliver a devastating soundtrack to Phil's fast and brutal vocals. But they also make room for one of the best metal ballads, showing Phil's range and Diamond's amazing riff work, melodies and the trademark riff harmonics he's been using since the first record, difference is now everyone would hear his talent. Some of these songs go back as far as 1988 so the final cut would have been nothing short of perfection. For the first time the whole world could hear the birth of Groove Metal with that iconic Cowboys from Hell intro and one of the coolest breakdowns at the end of Domination. This album would inspire 90's metal but the boys weren't done with the transformation just yet...To some this new direction would have been far too dark and the party was coming to an end as they would go on to tour the US and the rest of the world.
